Why two sentences work
Horror runs on the gap between what you expect and what you get, and two sentences are pure gap. The first sentence builds a normal world. The second breaks exactly one thing about it — and your imagination does the rest, which is always worse than anything spelled out. It's the same engine as a joke, inverted: setup, then a punchline that punches back.

"The baby monitor crackled, and I heard my wife singing our daughter to sleep. My wife has been standing next to me for the last ten minutes."
"I finally taught my parrot to say 'who's there' whenever the doorbell rings. It said it three times last night, and the doorbell never rang."
"My smart speaker started playing my morning playlist at 3 a.m. I never made a morning playlist."
"The dentist said my X-ray showed thirty-three teeth. I counted mine twice on the way home: thirty-two."
"I live alone, so I was surprised to find two coffee mugs in the sink. I was more surprised that one was still warm."
How to write your own
Sentence one: something ordinary, specific, calm. Sentence two: one wrong detail, delivered flat — no adjectives, no screaming. The classic mistake is explaining the scare ("...because a ghost!"). Don't. End on the wrong detail and walk away. The reader's brain will finish it at 2 a.m. whether they want it to or not.
