About DarkTales
DarkTales is a small horror blog with one simple idea: find the most unsettling stories told by real people on Reddit, and retell each one from scratch in our own words.
Why real people's stories
Fiction can be scary. But a story hits differently when you know a real person sat down and wrote "this happened to me." Every tale here started as someone's own account — shared on Reddit, often in the middle of the night — and we treat it with that weight: rewritten carefully, never copied, always credited to the person who lived to tell it.
How it works
- We read widely. We look through horror and paranormal communities — r/nosleep, r/shortscarystories, r/letsnotmeet, r/Glitch_in_the_Matrix, r/Thetruthishere and others — for complete, well-told stories.
- We rewrite, never copy. Every story on this site is paraphrased end to end: new sentences, new phrasing, same plot and atmosphere. Long verbatim passages are never reproduced.
- We always credit. Each story names its original author (“Originally shared by u/<author> on r/<subreddit>”) and links directly to the original Reddit post so readers can find the author's own words.
Takedown & corrections
If you are the original author of a story retold here and you would like it removed or corrected — or if any credit link is wrong — just say so and we will take it down or fix it promptly. Authors keep every right to their work; this site claims none.
A note on content
These are horror stories. They may include mature or disturbing themes — stalkers, death, the paranormal. Reader discretion is advised.
Privacy
No accounts, no comments, no ads — and we keep data collection to the bare minimum. In plain words, here's everything:
We count how many times each story is read — just numbers, nothing about you. To tell real readers apart from bots, your browser keeps one random ID (stored only in your own browser, never linked to a name, email, or IP) and sends it once per visit so we can count distinct visitors per day. It only runs when analytics is allowed — never for visitors who declined. We use Microsoft Clarity to see how readers move through the site (session replays and heatmaps), but anything you type is masked, your IP address is anonymized, and visitors from the EU are asked for permission before this loads. Visitors from the UK and Switzerland see a short notice with a one-click opt-out instead — analytics runs unless they opt out. If something breaks in your browser, it may send us a short anonymous note so we can fix it — never any of your content.
If you subscribe to the newsletter, we keep your email only to send you new stories.
Every email has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing deletes your address.
One more small thing: if you tap a link in one of our emails, that visit gets tagged
with a random ID like sub_9f3k… — not your name or email, which we never
share with our analytics provider — just so we can tell subscriber visits apart from
anonymous ones. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes it.
We use one small cookie (dt_consent) just to remember your analytics
choice. That's everything. No advertising cookies, no selling data, nothing else.
